Rome and its fountains

In the town there are numerous fountains important for architecture, linger in the details of the fountains is equally interesting  to discover or rediscover these works of art in various parts of the city. Here are some:

Between Via del Quirinale and Via XX Settembre is located Via Quattro Fontane so called because at every corner there are four fountains desired by Pope Sixtus V in the late sixteenth century. Represent the Tiber recognizable by the wolf, the Arno with the lion symbol of Florence, Diana with the dog and Juno with the lion. Via della Printworks will arrive in Piazza di Trevi and here we see the Trevi Fountain, built between 1732 and 1762 to a design by Nicola Salvi by the will of Clement XII Corsini. There are four allegorical figures, perhaps related to the four seasons, the figure of in the chariot Ocean, in the form of a valve of shell, pulled by sea horses and led by tritons, representation symbolizing Plenty and Sobriety. Tradition has it that the tourist, throwing a coin in the fountain back to Rome. At Piazza Navona we will find the Fountain of the Four Rivers by Bernini and dated 1651. At the sides of four statues of other artists, representing the rivers: the Nile with his head veiled because its sources were not yet known but tradition is reporting that was to not see the church of St. Agnes by Borromini, the Ganges, the Danube and the Rio de la Plata with his arm raised, always for the tradition, for the fear that the church could collapse. Instead the Church was begun after the completion of the fountain. The Fountain of Moses is found in Piazza San Bernardo, and dates back to 1585-1589, the author wanted to represent Moses and beyond. In the side niches we can admire the episodes of Aaron described in the Bible. The authors are: John Fontana, Domenico Fontana. A Tiber Ripa is located instead Fountain of Timone in Ripa to remember that there was a the river port for trade. A big helm, with the bar in the center and naval motifs typical of the structure are the elements that make up the fountain; water collects in a small cup suspended; high is located the coat of arms of the district, on both sides of the rudder is located that of Rome. In Via dei Staderari here an odd fountain Fountain of the Books  representing a deer's head between two volumes, on two consoles on each side and the water flows by two cannelle shaped bookmark. La deer's head is the symbol of the district of S. Eustace, books in remembrance of the University La Sapienza. Via dei Staderari, formerly home to manufacturers of weighing scales, originally called away the University. A little curiosity: between the horns of the deer was engraved, incorrectly, the number IV while the one exact district of S. Eustace VIII.
